Zoom Interview Tips for Job Seekers

Zoom Interview Tips for Job Seekers

Interviewing during COVID times is a different kind of beast. We have completed multiple phone interviews but after some time, we noticed it was not enough when it came to doing our due diligence to make sure a candidate was the most qualified for the job. We started doing more and more Zoom interviews and it has been a game changer. On top of meeting the candidate and seeing them face to face, as the interviewer, we can see into the world of this candidate and see if they really are a fit.

We may have already released a blog providing in-person interview tips, but we wanted to remind job seekers of other advice for the next webcam chat with an employer.

1. Dress to Impress

You may be tempted to want to stay comfortable since you aren't leaving your couch, but that doesn't matter. Just because you aren't in front of an employer live and in-person doesn't mean we can't see you. Wear your business casual/professional clothes to show the employer even though you are home, you are taking this interview seriously as it is as important through the computer as it is at the office. For a bonus, when you dress the part, you feel the part. You can become more confident in your interview when you dress confidently. Look good, feel good.

2. Be Early

Similar to an in-person interview, showing up early is actually showing up on time. If a link is sent for your interview, test out the link when it is sent. Make sure whatever application needed for the interview is downloaded so you won't have any last second surprises when trying to log in for your scheduled time. Also, most applications notify employers of when participants sign into a meeting. Signing in early definitely makes a great first impression - which can never be a bad thing when trying to get on the interviewer's good side.

3. Eliminate all Distractions

Not many job seekers realize how important it is to make your background look presentable. Remove any signs/pictures/décor with obscenities, put any pets into another room, shut the tv off, etc. Make sure the lighting is appropriate. This also goes for those who have to do an interview through a smart phone. Moving around while talking is distracting in itself with the noise from the microphone. Set the smart phone up on an elevated surface against something that will keep it upright. Keep things simple so the focus is all on you.

4. Be Professional

A Webcam interview is the same as an in-person or phone interview. Act as if you are there. Answer the questions the same way you would if you were right in front of the employer. Speak professionally. Do everything the same you would do as you would for an in-person interview. No matter who you are interviewing with, please always remember you are making an impression with every word you say and action you take in the interview.

Following these tips can help you score points to move forward to a possible in-person interview with an employer. TEC wants you to get to the next step in the process. Don't forget to prepare for your Zoom interviews the same way you prepare for in-person setting.

Good luck and go forth job seekers!
